~PROLOGUE~
He makes me feel a certain way... a certain way that you can't get with other dragons. He's so different, just like me, and he understands that it's OK to be a tristisitis... Despite the Queen's word. Cipher paused, a quill in her claws. This wasn't her idea. She hated talking about her feelings and yet, here she was lost in thought about... I won't think about him anymore. She banned me from talking to him. I have to forget him. I have to let go of him. And try as she might, he filled her head like an unforgettable song. She loved him so much it bordered on an obsession.
She missed him.
Cipher set down her quill and strode over to her window. The Torquest Kingdom was only adding insult to injury. Queen Screwy had told her not to talk to him, but the cotton candy clouds kept shaping themselves into his face. His kind, understanding eyes... his sweet, rakish grin...
Stop looking. Stop thinking about him. Screwy didn't understand... they were meant to be! Keeping me away will do more harm than good. I love him.
That made up her mind. She kicked her door open, ran down the stairs and burst out of her hut in the candy trees. There he was, stopping for a drink at the vendor across the rainbow river. She wanted to scream his name, run towards him.
Silent tears rolled down her cheeks as she saw him lean in to kiss the vendor's lips. No. She wanted to run away, run away from him, that lying scum. He told her, he told her, that he loved her and here he was, sharing that love with someone else. Like she didn't matter to him.
Like she was expendable to him.
And he turned.
His eyes widened in shock.
"Cipher, wait," he gasped, leaping over the river to join her. "Wait, please. I can explain!"
"Get away from me!" she shouted. "You-you... you lying scum of the earth!"
Crying freely, she turned on her heel and stormed away. His talons grabbed her shoulders and spun her around. But it wasn't him. His eyes were searching, but his voice was that of Queen Screwy's. "I told you to stay away from him," he hissed in her voice. "I told you if you kept pursuing him there would be consequences."
It was sunset and Cipher woke up, drenched in sweat.
She missed him.
